SUMMARY:Special ZOOM Event: Panel Discussion on White Privilege
DESCRIPTION:White Privilege? Institutional Racism?\n \n \n \n	\n \nThursday Dec 10\, 2020 from 7 to 8:30 PM\nCome (via Zoom)\, listen and learn. You will hear three short personal stories from members of the MCWRET (Monmouth Center for World Religions and Ethical Thought). One story will be from a white person (Joe Ritacco)\, one will be from a black person (Georgette Thomas) who will address the flip-side of privilege\, and one story will be from a self-described “brown” South Asian person (Sathya Andavolu)\, who has experienced both sides of privilege. Our intent is not to shame or guilt anyone\, but to increase awareness and motivate further learning and hopefully ongoing engagement. \nThere will be ample time for attendees to join the conversation\, possibly by sharing a short personal episode of privilege\, or the opposite\, in your life. \n\n\n\n\nFor ZOOM Access Information:  Please contact Joe Ritacco at JRitacco@comcast.net\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr

SUMMARY:CFPA EVENT: 40th Anniversary Multifaith Service and Conference for Peace
DESCRIPTION:The Coalition for Peace Action will hold its 40th Anniversary Multifaith Service and Conference for Peace on Sunday\, November 10\, 2019\n\n\nJim Wallis will be the preacher for the morning Multifaith Service.\nDan Ellsberg is confirmed to speak in the afternoon Conference\, and attend a Sponsor Reception afterward.\nWe will also hear from Jenny Town and Dr. Frank von Hippel (scroll down for bios)\nThe Multifaith Service will take place at 11:00 AM at the Princeton University Chapel (on campus\, next to Firestone Library on Washington Road). The service is free (there will be a free will offering to benefit CFPA) and does not require pre-registration. \nThe Conference for Peace will take place from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM\, at Nassau Presbyterian Church (61 Nassau St\, Princeton\, NJ). There is a fee to attend (free for students).  \nAfter the Conference\, there will be a reception with Dan Ellsberg from 5:00 to 6:00 (also at Nassau Presbyterian Church\, in the Assembly Room) – you must be registered as a Sponsor to attend the reception.  \n\n\n\nJim Wallis is a New York Timesbestselling author\, public theologian\, speaker\, and international commentator on ethics and public life. He served on President Obama’s White House Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and was former vice chair of and currently serves on the Global Agenda Council on Values of the World Economic Forum. \nJim is the author of 12 books. He is president and founder of Sojourners\, where he is also editor-in-chief of Sojourners\, which has a combined print and online readership of more than 5 million people. Jim frequently speaks in the United States and abroad. His columns appear in major newspapers\, including The New York Times\, Washington Post\, USA Today\, Los Angeles Times\, \nJim was raised in a Midwest evangelical family. As a teenager\, his questioning of the racial segregation in his church and community led him to the black churches and neighborhoods of inner-city Detroit. He spent his student years involved in the civil rights and antiwar movements. Jim founded Sojourners while a student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois. Jim and several other students started a small magazine and community with a Christian commitment to social justice. More than 40 years later\, Sojourners has grown into a national faith-based organization. In 1979\, Time magazine named Wallis one of the “50 Faces for America’s Future.” \n\n\nJim will be signing copies of his book\, coming out in late September\, after the Multifaith Worship in the morning. The book is called “Christ in Crisis: Why We Need to Reclaim Jesus.” In the book\, Jim argues that our cultural and political crisis largely stems from how the American church has become disconnected from the teachings of Jesus Christ. Building on the popular and controversial “Reclaiming Jesus” declaration he and other church leaders wrote in May 2018 to address America’s moral crisis—to which 5 million people responded—Wallis points to eight radical questions central to Jesus’ teaching: the Neighbor Question\, the Image Question\, the Truth Question\, the Power Question\, the Fear Question\, the Caesar Question\, the Peacemaker Question\, and the Discipleship Question. By asking ourselves these questions\, we can measure whether we are thinking and acting “in Jesus’ name.” As he has done throughout his career\, Wallis’s prophetic vision and pastoral wisdom both provoke and counsel\, guiding us forward during this time of confusion and fear. He reveals how following the teachings of Jesus emboldens and empowers us to “be not afraid”\, but to act in courage and hope. \n\n\n\nDaniel Ellsberg was born in Chicago in 1931. After graduating from Harvard in 1952 with a B.A. summa cum laude in Economics\, he studied for a year at King’s College\, Cambridge University\, on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. Between 1954 and 1957\, Ellsberg spent three years in the U.S. Marine Corps\, serving as rifle platoon leader\, operations officer\, and rifle company commander. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics at Harvard in 1962 with his thesis\, Risk\, Ambiguity and Decision. \nIn 1959\, Ellsberg became a strategic analyst at the RAND Corporation\, and consultant to the Defense Department and the White House\, specializing in problems of the command and control of nuclear weapons\, nuclear war plans\, and crisis decision-making. In 1961 he drafted the guidance from Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the operational plans for general nuclear war. He was a member of two of the three working groups reporting to the Executive Committee of the National Security Council (EXCOM) during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. \nOn return to the RAND Corporation in 1967\, Ellsberg worked on the top secret McNamara study of U.S. Decision-making in Vietnam\, 1945-68\, which later came to be known as the Pentagon Papers. In 1969\, he photocopied the 7\,000 page study and gave it to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; in 1971 he gave it to the New York Times\, the Washington Post and 17 other newspapers. His trial\, on twelve felony counts posing a possible sentence of 115 years\, was dismissed in 1973 on grounds of governmental misconduct against him\, which led to the convictions of several White House aides and figured in the impeachment proceedings against President Nixon. \nSince the end of the Vietnam War\, Ellsberg has been a lecturer\, writer and activist on the dangers of the nuclear era\, wrongful U.S. interventions and the urgent need for patriotic whistleblowing. \n\n\n\nJenny Town is a Research Analyst at the Stimson Center and the Managing Editor and Producer of “38 North\,” a web journal that provides policy and technical analysis on North Korea. She is the former Assistant Director of the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies where she focused on North Korea\, US-DPRK relations\, US-ROK alliance\, and Northeast Asia regional security. She is an expert reviewer for Freedom House’s Freedom in the World Index\, where she previously worked on the Human Rights in North Korea Project. She is an Associate Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute at SAIS\, a Member of the National Committee on North Korea\, and an Associate Member of the Council of Korean Americans. She also serves on the Editorial Board for Inkstick\, an online foreign policy journal for emerging scholars. \nPrior to working in Korean affairs\, she was the Communications Director for Peace X Peace; the Director of the Washington (DC) Office/Special Projects Manager for Government Relations at the College Board; and a Project Manager at Clarity Coverdale Fury Advertising\, Inc. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Melton Foundation.
